A few years ago, at the request of your GSAC Board of Directors, the City installed signage and flashing lights on Gulf Shore Blvd at the Horizon Way and Vedado Way crosswalks. GSAC raised concerns about pedestrian safety. These lights were added to help make crossing the street safe for everyone.

We have recently noticed residents have been crossing without pressing the button and activating the flashing lights. This creates a risk for both pedestrians and drivers who may not see someone entering the crosswalk, especially at Horizon Way, where the water feature creates a very dangerous blind spot for drivers.

Please take a moment to push the button and wait for the lights to start flashing before crossing. It’s a small action that makes a big difference in keeping our community safe.

GSAC recently met with Corporal Jeff Perry to discuss the enforcement of pedestrian crossings at crosswalks, particularly the Horizon Way at the GSBN beach end crosswalk.

Corporal Perry informed us that a special patrol has been created for NPD Officers to enforce crosswalks with special attention to Horizon Way, where visibility is a big issue.

Corporal Perry suggested that pedestrians should use caution when crossing the road and to please consider these safety tips.

  • Don’t assume the vehicle driver has seen you or will slow down.
  • Use a designated crosswalk when crossing the street.
  • Use the button to activate the pedestrian flashing sign.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing to aid with visibility.
  • Use a flashlight if walking before sunrise or after sunset.

Drivers should use caution when observing pedestrians and please consider these safety tips.

  • Slow down in high pedestrian areas such as GSBN, Harbour Dr, Park Shore Dr, and Crayton Rd.
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, never pass a vehicle at a crosswalk.
  • Take caution when driving at night or in poorly lit areas.
  • Use extreme caution when turning right or left, look for pedestrians, and yield to them.

Thank you, Corporal Perry, for the additional enforcement and safety tips.
